Chapter Four

Alex was awoken the next morning by the rattling of keys. When he opened his eyes, he saw a police officer opening the lock on the cell. He let out one of the other men and Alex’s blood boiled when he was once again locked in.

Later that day, Matt showed up, having heard of his arrest through friends. His stay was brief, but Alex asked if he would post his bail if he was granted. To Alex’s surprise, Matt refused, saying that he didn’t want to get involved because it was turning into a very high profile and well-publicized case.

Matt’s words turned the knife that was inside Alex’s back a full 360*. It was a very awful feeling to feel alone and abandoned. Matt was his closest friend, so if he didn’t want to get involved, he had no one else to call.

Jeff was right after all, the battle was lost before they had even begun.

Over and over Alex replayed the situation in his mind, wondering where he went wrong.

He was worried about Laela being alone. He hadn’t gotten a chance to call her because he was only allowed one phone call. He should have asked Matt to call the villa and let her know what was going on, but he was in shock and couldn’t think clearly it broke his heart to know how lonely she must have been feeling.

The memory of how beautiful their day had been was replaying in his mind when he heard an officer call his name.

His attorney had finally arrived.

The officers questioned him in the presence of his attorney, and thankfully, he was able to get a bail hearing for that evening. Because the charge was against one of his children, the judge refused to allow him to post bail for himself.

This news didn’t make Alex feel any better because he had no idea who would come to bail him. Everyone he knew would either take Maria’s side or stay away from the drama to not be associated with him. Turns out, he might not have any friends at all. It was funny, how when you really need your friends and family, that was when they desert you.

Alex was taken back to his cell after court and the prospect of spending another night in jail loomed over his head.

They gave him his meal and Alex scoffed and pushed it away. He would rather starve than eat it.

“You might as well eat it. I’ve been here for days.” His cell-mate told him.

Shaking his head, Alex responded, “My future might look bleak, but my God isn’t sleeping. I will beat this charge because good always wins over evil.”

The man laughed, apparently thinking that Alex’s philosophical thinking would do him no good.

Alex refused to believe that this was his faith. He had a small moment of doubt, but he was back on track. He would leave that place a free man.

As the hours crawled by, Alex still had no idea who would be his surety. He had no one else to call to ask such a huge favor.
